Labor Day has just passed and already the Greene County secondary roads department is preparing for winter.
County engineer Wade Weiss reported to the county supervisors Tuesday that the crew has begun hauling road salt for storage at county sheds. The county has purchased 800 tons of salt – eight train cars – at $67 per ton. The salt comes by train from Kansas to Ames and the secondary roads crew brings it the last stretch using side dump trucks that can carry 25 tons per load.
Even with manpower and fuel to haul the salt from Ames, the price is still below the state bid, Weiss said.
The salt will be mixed with sand before it’s applied to roads.
The supervisors approved an updated 28E agreement with the Central Iowa Juvenile Detention Center. The agreement is unchanged except for adding new member counties. There are now 30 member counties.
The supervisors discussed the position of veterans affairs director which is open with the departure of Tracie Perez. The supervisors will wait for input from the county veterans affairs commission before posting the vacancy.
Billie Jo Hoskins, speaking on behalf of the Greene County 4-H Foundation, asked for permission to occasionally use the light pole brackets now displaying Courthouse 100 banners for 4-H banners. The foundation will purchase the banners and hopes to display them during National 4-H Week in October and for two weeks in July. The supervisors approved the request.
